Fred Rogers - Won't You be My Neighbor

Hi All, so Derek and I try to go on a date each week and we take turns on picking the date.  It was my turn the other week and I picked to go and see the movie Won't You Be My Neighbor.   I have to admit that I picked the show because I like going to the movies (hence the movie blog) and I like watching documentaries, and when I asked the movie theater owner what movie he would recommend to a person who really liked ethical movies, and didn't like violence or cussing, he recommended Won't You Be My Neighbor which is a documentary about Fred Rogers and his show Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.

I loved the movie!!!!!!  And I can't wait for my older children to see it!!!

Then I took my daughter, Portia, to see it with me.
Here is the shout out that we did on the movie.

I didn't really watch Mr. Rogers growing up and my children didn't either, so I didn't know much about him.  But after watching the documentary on him Won't You Be My Neighbor I was so impressed with his love and his righteousness that I have been studying all I can of him.  I'm having a great time listening to the songs that he composed and introducing them to my children.

Here is one of my favorite songs by Fred Rogers called Goodnight God

Here's a link to some of his other songs.

Since I didn't watch Mr. Roger's Neighborhood growing up, I've been enjoying watching through them now and introducing them to my children.  I love how he always talks in a gentle, loving voice and how he talks about the importance of feelings and managing them in positive uplifting ways.  You can watch shows by Mr. Rogers on PBS Kids

Any time I discover a new hero I love to learn all I can about them.  Here are some of my favorite interviews of Fred Rogers.  This first one is an 8 part series, 4 hour interview.  I like to put it on when I am cleaning.

Here is a commencement address that he did at Dartmouth College, an university he once attended.

Here is a speech he gave before congress to try to secure funding for PBS

This is my favorite quote from Mr. Rogers

And in your study of the wisdom of Mr. Rogers don't forget to check out his books.

I think many girls dream that school or church dances will by like Fred Astaire movies.  With the romance and the charm and the magic.
